Electric cars may soon receive a jolt which will make them more viable against less expensive combustion-engined models.

Up till now, electric cars - whether fully battery-powered or plug-in hybrids - make up less than 0.2 per cent of the total car population, with more than half belonging to an electric car-sharing company. This is despite long-standing tax rebates which partially offset the cost of owning such cars.
