First, the Michelin-starred hawker stall Liao Fan Hong Kong Soya Sauce Chicken Rice announced the opening of its Hawker Chan restaurant in Chinatown on Nov 18.

Now, another hawker brand has also gone upscale - the popular Wah Kee prawn noodles from Pek Kio Market & Food Centre. It will open early next month (Dec) at the Esplanade Mall, while retaining its hawker stall.

Established in 1951, Wah Kee is known for its signature prawn noodles featuring large crustaceans. At its restaurant, the noodles will be priced at $6 a bowl, $1 more than the price at the hawker stall.

Other dishes on the menu include fresh Boston lobster and oyster pancake; blue mussles in a pot stir-fried with shallots, spring onions and ginger; and Japanese squid grilled on a hotplate. To go with the seafood, there will also be a selection of wine.

Wah Kee is partnering businessman Andrew Tan in the restaurant venture. He is the founder of Japanese food arena Eat At Seven at Suntec City, as well as Japanese restaurant Tomo Izakaya at Clarke Quay.

Wah Kee opens at 01-13C Esplanade Mall, 8 Raffles Avenue, in early December.
