Carrying stacks of cash abroad can make you feel like a target for snatch thieves, while swiping your credit card chalks up foreign-exchange conversion fees and administrative fees that tack on another 2.5 to 3.5 per cent of your transaction amount.

Save on these fees by using a multi-currency account or mobile wallet for overseas spending instead, which also lets you exchange and store foreign currency when the rate is favourable.
