Visiting her former domestic helper's home town in the Philippines gave Ho Ming Xia a glimpse of what women give up when they seek a better life abroad

Many Singaporean visitors to Manila are there to work and play in the upscale financial and lifestyle areas Makati and Bonifacio Global City, visit colonial churches or discover speakeasy bars.

But on Ms Ho Ming Xia's trips there in 2015 and last year, her strongest memories were exploring the zinc-roofed homes and narrow alleys of Taguig, a city about 1½ hours from downtown Manila.
