As I stepped into Tokyo's Trunk Hotel (trunk-hotel.com), the first thing that hits is the lively atmosphere in the open-plan lobby, buzzing with meetings and the tapping of laptop keyboards among its tables and low-slung seats.

Throughout the day, baristas churn out aromatic brews and, when evening comes, mixologists shake up creative cocktails.
