Travel Black Book: Have a hearty feast in Bulgaria's Sofia

Take in the thriving art, culture and food scene in the capital of Bulgaria

Favourite destination: Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria. Bulgaria has my favourite mix of history, culture, art and hearty food. It's a melting pot where people welcomed me with open arms. There is something for everyone: sightseeing, hiking, sunbathing at the Black Sea, skiing in winter, and a burgeoning cafe culture. It's also a very affordable country.

I started my sojourn with a free walking tour (freesofiatour.com), which runs twice a day starting from the Palace of Justice. It was informative and interesting, just under two hours and led by witty young guides from the theatre world. It gave me a quick overview of the city. Free Sofia Tour also runs a paid cultural tour which gives you a peek into Bulgarian life and food. It's a great way to get to know the people.
