Longer public holiday periods can lead to traffic mayhem and deaths. More public holidays can be “bad for business”. But a durian public holiday would still be nice.

"Holidays" can be created for unhappy reasons too.

For example, in 2017, Gulf News reported that Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte declared Sept 21 as a day off ahead of protest rallies planned by opponents of his bloody crackdown on the illegal drug trade.
