In conjunction with National Day, the Straits Times Press is launching Majulah Moments - a book of postcards featuring 20 vintage images of National Day Parades over the last 50 years from the Singapore Press Holdings archives.
Designed to revive the art of handwritten correspondence, the postcards come with prepaid postage - so all you have to do is write on one, tear it off and drop it in a mailbox.
It is the first local postage prepaid postcard book to be launched in Singapore and comes in a limited edition of 1,500. Curated by The Straits Times Picture Desk chief photographer Joyce Fang, the postcards feature iconic images such as soldiers in clean, crisp lines at the parade in 1993 and black-and- white stills of children waving flags gleefully in 1985.
Ms Fang says: "Besides historically significant photos, I looked for images that were quirky, candid or aesthetically appealing, and also ones that depicted how the parades have evolved through the decades."
She adds: "This book is by no means a comprehensive look at National Day Parades - instead, it provides snippets of our historical parades, told in photos that act as a bridge between past and present.
"Hopefully, when people look through this book, it will stir and rekindle memories."
There will be a pop-up booth on Aug 8 and 9 at the Toa Payoh HDB Hub selling the book and First Day Cover Stamp bundle for $30.
The Toa Payoh post office will also be dressed up with an exhibition of images from past National Day Parades.
• The prepaid postage postcard book, Majulah Moments, is on sale for $26.75 (including GST) at leading bookshops and online via www.stpressbooks.com.sg
