Some pet owners prefer to adopt an older animal as it is more likely to be overlooked in a shelter and is easier to manage compared with a young one

When Mrs Stephanie O'Carroll and her husband were considering moving to Singapore from Japan, adopting an older cat was part of the lure.

Adopting a cat in Japan, where the couple met and lived for several years, was difficult, says Mrs O'Carroll, a Singaporean married to an Irishman.
