Appliance-maker will go head to head with auto giants, Tesla and hundreds of Chinese start-ups in its quest to build electric cars

Half a century ago, a wealthy Italian tractor-maker was rebuffed by Ferrari when he suggested improvements to its sports cars.

"You stick to making tractors and leave making sports cars to me," Mr Enzo Ferrari purportedly told him.
