When Ferrari replaced the 458 Italia with a downsized, turbocharged 488 GTB five years ago, purists cursed.

It is understandable. Next to the booming moving orchestra that was the 458, the 488 was a portable radio. Its 3.9-litre biturbo V8 had so much low-end torque, it never needed more than 2,000rpm to get going - unlike the Italia's 4.5-litre normally aspirated eight-cylinder, which demanded to be whipped like a naughty boy.
