Wallpaper* looking for young talent

Calling emerging Singapore designers: If you have the talent and desire to design a standout product for Wallpaper*'s Handmade exhibition, the influential lifestyle magazine wants your ideas.

An open call goes out today to those who have graduated in the last five years in the areas of architecture, fashion, product design, graphic design, furniture design and industrial design.

Designers have to craft products around the theme, Wellness And Wonder, for Wallpaper* Handmade, an annual showcase of unique pieces made with sophisticated craftsmanship.

The magazine's creative brief tasks designers with "creat(ing) pieces that accessorise the cult of self- improvement, objects that exercise the cerebellum and work out the glutes, that replenish the body, jet-wash the life force and restore the innate harmony of the individual".

Some ideas Wallpaper* put forth include hand-woven yoga mats, portable libraries or vitamin-pill cabinets.

Just one person, called the Next Generation Designer, will be chosen to work with Wallpaper*, which will commission the production of his or her piece.

Interested designers who are Singapore citizens or permanent residents should submit their concepts by Sept 15. The winning design will be announced on Oct 31.

Besides the Next Generation Designer, Wallpaper* will also pick six practising Singapore-based designers to each produce an original work for Handmade 2018.

Together, the seven products will make their debut at next year's Singapore Design Week in March, before showing the following month with other international designers at Handmade 2018 during Milan Design Week.

Ms Agnes Kwek, executive director of DesignSingapore Council, says the open call is "an exceptional opportunity for Singaporean talents", given the exposure to the international design scene. The national agency for design is collaborating with Wallpaper* on the open call.

She says: "I urge next-generation designers to respond actively to the call for participation. Show the world that Singapore has talent."
