Hartono shone in theatre

While the flurry of media coverage following Singaporean Nathan Hartono's triumph in Sing! China is understandable, many of us who have followed his career for years already expected great things in his future.

My appreciation of his talent began in 2012, at his stage debut in Pangdemonium's production of Spring Awakening. He was equally terrific in Pangdemonium's Next To Normal in 2013, and I was fortunate enough to speak to him at the post-show meet and greet.

I was impressed by his humility and graciousness, and he blushed when I commented that he will make it on Broadway someday.

Many congratulations to Hartono on his well-deserved success. I urge Singaporeans to support local theatre, especially productions which showcase young talent.

Many are comparable to Broadway standards and nothing is more thrilling than having your opinion validated when one of these young artists is recognised on an international level.
