Ambeng Cafe by Ummi Abdullah

Started by Ms Ummi Abdullah, who owns tingkat delivery service Dapur Ummi Abdullah Catering, this 60-seat eatery sells about 200 platters of nasi ambeng daily. Choose from four types of platters with 10 or 14 dishes. Prices start at $23 for two persons. Stand-out dishes include ayam kalio (chicken in spicy coconut gravy).

Open: Noon to 9pm (Tuesday to Sunday), 3 to 9pm (Friday), closed on Monday

Hajjah Mariam Cafe

This 40-seat nasi padang eatery offers six types of nasi ambeng. Prices start at $8 for a single portion. For those looking for nostalgia, this place serves its nasi ambeng on enamel platters.

Makmur Restaurant

This 30-year-old eatery started selling nasi ambeng three years ago after customers requested it. Its nasi ambeng has 13 dishes, including beef rendang and sambal goreng. The price is determined by the number of diners, and for each person, it is $10. Unlike most nasi ambeng, where the rice is a dome-shaped mountain, the rice here is shaped into pyramids like nasi tumpeng, an Indonesian cone-shaped yellow rice dish.

Nur Indah Padang Cuisine

This eight-month-old nasi padang restaurant serves five sizes of nasi ambeng, with prices starting at $12.50 for one person. Its platter includes mee goreng and dishes cooked Padang-style: Instead of deep-frying paru (cow lungs), the offal is simmered in sweet soya sauce and spices.

Padi@Bussorah

This casual chic 130-seat restaurant serves nasi ambeng in three sizes. A single serving costs $9.90 and a platter for four costs $50. The platters comprise 13 dishes, including ayam lemak chilli padi and sambal sotong. Groups of six or more can chill out at its Cozy Corner, which has low tables, cushions and floor mats.
