SINGAPORE (THE NEW PAPER) - The Christmas season doesn't begin until you're eating a Christmas dessert. These sugary treats mark the season of calories and gloriously decorated cakes.
Here are a few for you to try, and a couple that might surprise you.
COCONUT ALMOND TART
Each Christmas, it's easy to find something to love at Cafe Noel (operated by the culinary team at Fairmont Singapore and Swissotel The Stamford).
This year, my favourite is the Coconut Almond Tart (from $32).
Coconut and almond form the crust, then there's a sponge cake over it, covered with an icing piped Christmas tree. The creamy and nutty flavours make this particularly memorable.
For extra glamour, edible gold dust is sprinkled over it.
KUMQUAT AND STRAWBERRY YULE LOG
The Kumquat and Strawberry Yule Log ($68) from The St. Regis Singapore (Tel: 6506-6860) is an interesting mix of flavours, under a vivid coat of red.
A more conventional choice is the Signature Chocolate Yule Log with Gold Flakes ($68), featuring a Viennese cocoa sponge cake.
BLACK FOREST CHRISTMAS FEAST
As part of The Carvery's Black Forest Christmas Feast (between Dec 12 and Jan 1, from $45), you'll get the Black Forest Trifle on the buffet line.
What makes it special is the dark chocolate mousse and brandy soaked cherries.
And since the restaurant is famous for its roasts, you'll probably need to skip a meal before you head down to Park Hotel Alexandra (Tel: 6828-8880).
WHISKEY PROFITEROLES CHOCOLATE TART
This is perfect for those who need alcohol to get over the festive season.
Goodwood Park Hotel's Whiskey Profiteroles Chocolate Tart ($48 for 600g) is filled with whiskey custard and decorated with caramelised pistachios and an Oreo crust.
You can call 6730-1867 to place your order.
SUSHI CAKE FRENZY
If you really like sushi, the Sushi Cake Frenzy (from $60) from Oceans of Seafood (Tel: 6466-1005) is for you.
It features 10 ingredients such as ikura, mekajiki, ika and kanikama, and assembled by hand.
The base is rice, so it's actually really a meal in itself.
THE HIVERNETTE
The Hivernette ($75) from Antoinette is basically a beautifully decorated sandwich.
There are four layers, filled with savoury items such as tomato jam, wild mushroom, and boeuf bourguignon, topped with roasted vegetables.
