Super Loco Custom House: Mad for Mexican

I'm not usually one for salads but the Ensalada Granos ($8) worked for me on many levels. The spice, the textures of the quinoa and pearl barley, the sweetness of the pomegranate and tomatoes, and beauty of the bowl made this a standout. TNP PHOTO: YEOH WEE TECK
While the Atun Tostadas ($15) looks simple, the taste is complex. The torched tuna went well with the lime mayonnaise and avocado, and created a light yet flavourful dish. TNP PHOTO: YEOH WEE TECK
The Cerdo ($32) did not impress. The pork belly is cooked overnight with chillies, onions, vegetables, but arrived on the plate uneven. Some parts were too dry. But the black bean hummus saved it from being forgettable. TNP PHOTO: YEOH WEE TECK
Pescado Asada Con Chili Rojo Y Perejil ($46) is a whole sea bass barbecued and served with red and green salsa. The simplicity helps to centre the focus on ingredients. The locally sourced fish is fresh and the sweet flesh was all that was needed. TNP PHOTO: YEOH WEE TECK
If you are into chocolate, Tostadas Dulce De Chocolate ($15) is great for you. It is chocolate (tortilla) on chocolate (avocado butter) on bitter chocolate (ice cream). It is the best way to end the meal. TNP PHOTO: YEOH WEE TECK

THE NEW PAPER - I'm loco about Super Loco Custom House.

There's so much to like - the fun, energetic vibe, the stunning view, the historic location, the great service and the amazing food.

It is certainly one of the best new places I've eaten at this year.

Super Loco is the latest from The Loco Group, so Mexican food is definitely on the menu. But at this new location, there are ingredients such as lobster, oyster and Wagyu beef.

Still, the foundation of the food is strong, bright flavours, spice and lots of greens.

And for those eating healthy, the menu - designed by culinary director Chef Jason Jones, who co-founded the popular Mexican restaurant Mamasita in Melbourne - features 28 vegetarian items and is 90 per cent gluten-free.

To those of us who will eat anything, this is a way for us to alleviate any guilt.
