A career switch from teaching to baking almost 10 years ago did not go down well with Emerson Manibo's mother.

The Filipino-American baker, who has two stalks of Emmer wheat tattooed on his right hand, recalls: "She was very discouraging and said I don't have the hands to be a baker. I guess she didn't think I could commit.
