Avocado toast is not new. In fact, it has been around since at least the 1990s. But it was only in the 2010s that it became a trend, riding on the cafe boom and fanned by youngsters posting photos of the dish on social media.
And it shows no sign of wilting. Most cafes have a version of the dish on their menu, with some getting very creative with toppings.
