SINGAPORE - (THE NEW PAPER) 1919 Restaurant sits at an amazing spot - at the Fullerton Bay area. Housed in the historical building Waterboat House, it offers a great view of Marina Bay.

It's wonderfully chic inside too. The interior is quiet, with an understated elegance that belies the busloads of tourists that often stop outside the building en route to the Merlion and other attractions.

The menu is seafood-based. While the food is generally good, it isn't outstanding. No one can fault the dishes, but it won't rock your world.

But what the food lacks in pizzazz, 1919 makes up for in service, ambience and the dishes' aesthetics. For some, the latter could be worth the price of the meal.

The Ciopinno ($38) - a stew brimming with clams, shrimp, scallop, squid, mussels and pacific fish - is a sight to behold and, for me, the restaurant's best dish. The stock combines sweet and sour beautifully.

Another full-flavoured dish is the pan-roasted scallop dish called Saint-Jacques ($22). The scallop emulsion is especially tasty.

The Homad ($48) is blue lobster tail poached in paella butter. It looks great and tastes all right, but isn't particularly exciting.

The Bar D'Atlantique ($32) is a fancy name for its sea bass. It's a good dish, but does not thrill.

And in time for Christmas is the Traditional Slow Roasted Turkey Leg Roulade, part of 1919's festive three-course dinner menu ($80). It's good enough, but add the view and it will make quite a romantic meal.
