SINGAPORE - Shao in Frankel Avenue is not your usual Teochew restaurant. Opened about half a year ago, it defies several conventions.

It is tiny compared to other Teochew restaurants here, with an ambience one associates more with a Western cafe than a Chinese eatery. Small square tables are set up close to one another, with the option of joining them together for big groups.
