Godmama's Peranakan in new Funan mall shows potential, but the cooking still needs work

For the opening period - the length of which is left vague - the restaurant is not offering its full a la carte menu, but a smaller selection of 16 items comprising mostly its signatures. PHOTO: GODMAMA'S PERANKAN

SINGAPORE - Godmama's Peranakan, which opened at the newly revamped Funan mall on June 28, has the admirable ambition of introducing nonya cuisine to a younger generation. And it picked the right location, as the mall can be expected to draw a young crowd with its focus on IT, musical instruments and sports offerings.

So, besides the usual dishes the Peranakan community in Singapore is known for - such as ayam buah keluak and babi pongteh - the menu also includes items such as fried chicken wings that come with a belacan mayo. And there is a selection of cocktails infused with ingredients used in Peranakan cooking, such as gula melaka and butterfly pea flower, created by one of the owners' son who works at 28 HongKong Street.
