Taiwanese singer-actress Rene Liu makes her directorial debut with this bittersweet romance about young love and missed opportunities.

Here, top Chinese stars Zhou Dongyu and Jing Boran (both above) play a pair of lovers who reminisce about their past romance after bumping into each other years after they break up.

The film, which premiered in cinemas in China in May - the only country to get a theatrical release - was a huge box-office hit and made Liu the first female Chinese director to gross more than 1 billion yuan (S$206 million).

Zombie apocalypse films are aplenty, but this Australian film starring Martin Freeman (above) elevates the genre with emotional heft. He plays a newly infected father who desperately travels through rural Australia for a new caretaker for his infant daughter Rosie.


This Chilean film, about a young transgender woman who has to deal with the death of her older boyfriend, has swept almost every major award since its release last year, including Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards in March.

In the lead as Marina is Chilean actress Daniela Vega (above), who became the first transgender person in history to be an Academy Award presenter.

She was also named one of Time magazine's 100 most influential people in the world this year.

One of the greatest love stories told on film is the one of Jesse (Ethan Hawke) and Celine (Julie Delpy), an unlikely pair who fall in love after meeting on a train in American film-maker Richard Linklater's celebrated Before trilogy (Before Sunrise, 1995; Before Sunset, 2001; Before Midnight, 2013, above).

Although much of the films only feature the pair walking and talking, they are celebrated for their realistic portrayal of romance.
