Q & A

Mr Stanley Lui, 28, single, digital marketing executive

How would you describe your style?

My style is quirky. I like to mix prints and colours with monochromatic pieces. I have a shocking red Givenchy suit which I usually wear with white YSL sneakers. I also like colourful prints that have a pop-art look.

When did your interest in fashion start?

I remember watching reality television series America's Next Top Model during my junior college days and I was so fascinated by the beauty, creativity and skill behind fashion modelling.

Who are your favourite designers?

I love Canadian designer, photographer and artist Rad Hourani's vision of designing clothes that are gender-neutral.

Also, Italian fashion designer Miuccia Prada because she incorporates subtle yet interesting details such as contrast stitching, and German fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld for his level of craftsmanship and grand fashion-show sets at Chanel.

Who are your style icons?

American music producer and songwriter Pharrell Williams because he mixes womenswear pieces into his looks and pulls them off without looking too feminine; English songwriter and music producer Mark Ronson who I think is effortlessly cool even with just a simple bomber jacket and pants; and French-Canadian actor Xavier Dolan for his clean, tailored look.

What are the favourite pieces in your wardrobe?

My leather jacket from Hardy Hardy (photo 1) because of its stunning crystal-skull design at the back.

Also, my tropical print shirts from Prada (such as the one in photo 2) because it is one of the brand's most well-known designs, and my denim hat from London-based milliner and designer Philip Treacy (photo 3) because I like its lopsided elegant structure.

I also like my embroidered sweatshirt from the MTV x Marc Jacobs collaboration (photo 4) because it is a fun piece of clothing to wear to a dance party and, finally, my Wize & Ope metallic LED shoes (photo 5) because you can't go dancing without a pair of light-up shoes.

What are your weaknesses when it comes to shopping?

I have a weakness for unusual clothing pieces and eyewear, particularly ones that have interesting shapes or come in shocking colours. I have a pair of U-shaped, black-framed glasses from New York eyewear brand Grey Ant (photo 6).

What is your favourite splurge piece?

My Louis Vuitton clutch (photo 7), which I bought from online buying and selling platform Carousell for about $900. It is sleek, discreet and yet roomy enough to keep all my belongings. It's my go-to bag when I'm attending social events.

Is there a purchase you have regretted?

I have no regrets.

What is your most recent fashion purchase?

It would be a wine-coloured Gucci polo T-shirt (photo 8). I bought it in January for Chinese New Year and I like the gold snake and bee embroidery on the collar. I can't remember how much it costs.

What is the best shopping or style advice you live by?

It's not what you buy - it's how you carry it off that matters.
