I read with interest Sumiko Tan's column Fighting Fear In Middle Age (Life, Jan 17), where she wrote about being afraid of medical check-ups and making excuses to delay them.
I was a cancer patient many years ago. Although there is no sign of a relapse, I still worry every time I return for my yearly follow-up. I also have a history of chest pain.
My doctors advised a consultation with a cardiologist, but I kept postponing it out of fear.
But after reading what she wrote, I agree that we should take control of our own lives. Life comes with many challenges and setbacks - we cannot run away from them, but we can face them with more courage.
