Performances of the musical Evita will continue as scheduled at the Marina Bay Sands' Mastercard Theatre for the rest of the run until March 18, a spokesman for the integrated resort said.

On Tuesday, the curtain rose on the show at around 8pm, as scheduled, but fell again within the first half-hour because of unspecified "technical issues".

An intermission was called, according to an audience member who spoke to The Straits Times, and after 9pm, the audience was informed that the show had to be cancelled.

In response to queries from The Straits Times, Marina Bay Sands and promoter Base Entertainment said ticket-holders will be given refunds or offered tickets to the show on a different night.

The organisers did not respond to questions about what the problem had been. They did say the issues have been resolved.

"The show will go on tonight and for the rest of the run, as planned. We look forward to welcoming guests to catch this award-winning musical that's in Singapore for a limited run till March 18," the statement yesterday added.

There will be no additional show to make up for Tuesday's cancellation as this is a touring production.

The ongoing musical, starring London-born singer Emma Kingston, is a revival of the original Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice production and directed by legendary American producer Hal Prince.

Evita opened in South Africa before the Singapore run and will also be performed in Australia and Japan.

In an interview with The Straits Times earlier this year, Prince said he plans for the musical to eventually return to Broadway.
