News of American music legend Prince's death on Thursday (April 21) has triggered a flood of emotional tributes on social media, but one teacher's reaction to the tragic news probably tugged at the heartstrings more than most.

In a short 10-second clip tweeted by user @shvrdae, a student at the Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University, the teacher is seen putting up a YouTube video of Prince's hit song Purple Rain on the projector screen.

He then takes off his glasses before burying his face in his hands in a valiant effort to hold back tears.

The tweet has since gone viral, racking up over 44,000 retweets and more than 54,000 likes.

Prince was found unresponsive at his Minnesota home and was later declared dead.

Rumours have circulated that the 57-year-old had been recently treated for a drug overdose.

He was admitted to hospital last Friday after his private jet made an unscheduled landing in Moline, Illinois, following a gig in Atlanta, amid reports he had been battling influenza.
