For a show about the man behind the rise of the Japanese adult-film industry, Netflix series The Naked Director is surprisingly dull.

It is not that the eight-episode, Japanese-language comedy drama, loosely based on the life of controversial porn director Toru Muranishi (played by Takayuki Yamada), is shy with its portrayals of graphic sex and nudity - there are enough here that one should probably refrain from watching the show during a crowded MRT commute.
