LOS ANGELES - The global popularity of South Korean pop culture - the so-called Korean Wave - has not been lost on Hollywood. It has been keen to put its spin on Korean productions such as the Bong Joon-ho film Snowpiercer (2013) and the medical drama Good Doctor (2013), both turned into American television shows.

But the unexpected success of The Masked Singer, inspired by a Korean singing competition, has moved the spotlight beyond scripted programming to reality and variety series from Asia.
