Its star Melissa Benoist says the DC Comics show has been breaking gender norms by putting women in charge in front of and behind the scenes

Director Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman (2017) was celebrated as the first big female-led superhero movie. But two years before that, Supergirl was already breaking gender barriers on the small screen.

And as the DC Comics show enters its third year, its avowedly feminist star Melissa Benoist tells The Straits Times that parents often come up and tell her that both their sons and daughters have been inspired by her character Kara, Superman's cousin from Krypton who saves the world as often as he does.
