For A Quiet Place director John Krasinski, there was never any doubt he would cast a deaf person as his hearing-impaired daughter in the film, about a family hiding from creatures that hunt by sound.

That choice is deeply meaningful for the deaf community, says 14-year-old Millicent Simmonds, the American actress he eventually chose for the role.
