Poor takings for Netflix's first feature

Netflix's first feature release, Beasts Of No Nation, struggled, collecting US$50,699 (S$70,000) from 31 locations; it was simultaneously available on the Netflix streaming service.

The drama about child soldiers in Africa and starring Idris Elba of The Wire fame had made headlines when Netflix bested all bidders by offering US$12 million for rights to the movie. It is difficult to call the picture a failure, however, given that Netflix is more interested in offering something exclusive to its subscribers.

A theatrical release is being launched primarily to qualify for awards.
