Fans of British superstar singer Adele will have to wait until at least next year for a new album, reported The New York Times.

The 26-year-old singer, whose last album, 21, sold more than 25 million copies, had been expected to release a new album this year.

The "no new album" news was tucked away in the latest annual financial report by Adele's label, XL Recordings, which was filed on Thursday with regulators in Britain, where the company is based.

XL said in the report: "There will not be a further new release by Adele during 2014 and consequently there will be a fall in XL's turnover and profits."

The company, whose other acts include Vampire Weekend and the xx, made US$15 million (S$19 million) in net profit on almost $61 million in revenue in 2013.

The New York Times reported that the lack of an Adele album will impact other companies such as Columbia Records, a unit of Sony Music Entertainment, which has distributed her last two albums in the United States and throughout Latin America.

Only five albums released in the last year have sold more than one million copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan, and only one of them - Disney's Frozen soundtrack - has sold more than 3 million.

A spokeswoman for the label declined further comment. XL is half-owned by Beggars Group, a mini-conglomerate of independent labels.

On Wednesday, a much slimmed down Adele was spotted in Hackney in London watching English singer-songwriter FKA Twigs in concert. Daily Mail, quoting sources, said Adele has given up smoking and taken up pilates. She has a two-year-old son with charity entrepreneur Simon Konecki.

Music Times, an American music website, reported that the massive success of Adele's second album, 21, has helped the singer earn up to £80,000 pounds (S$163,000) a day, despite not releasing a new album in over three years.

21 was the top-selling album worldwide in 2011 and 2012 and won six Grammy Awards in 2012 including Album of the Year, equalling the record for most Grammy Awards won by a female artist in one night
