If you were to rank the top-grossing films of 2018, it would not be until you reached No. 14 that an original, non-sequel, non-spin-off, non-remake title would appear: the disaster epic Skyscraper (2018). Then, more franchise movies until No. 21, when the spy thriller Red Sparrow (2018) enters.
And it is much the same for the years going back almost a decade. It is not until one reaches back to 2009 before a non-Harry Potter, Transformers or Marvel superhero title appears at the top: the science-fiction epic Avatar.
