HOUSTON • Two years after Mariah Carey's relationship with Australian billionaire James Packer lost its shine, the singer is now selling an engagement ring he gave her.
According to the New York Post, a source said the ring was sold to a jeweller in Los Angeles for US$2.1 million (S$2.8 million) even though it was bought for a rumoured US$10 million.
After they split up, he had reportedly asked for its return, although the settlement they negotiated allowed her to keep it.
Downplaying any notion that Carey, 48, is in need of cash, her publicist told the Page Six entertainment portal: "Mariah has been very vocal recently about her choice to move forward in her life surrounded by positivity.
"That requires leaving emotional and material baggage behind, including an old engagement ring from an ex-boyfriend."
Carey, who is scheduled to perform in Singapore on Nov 3, got engaged to Mr Packer in January 2016 after he had wooed her for less than a year.
