LOS ANGELES •A US$4-million (S$5.4-million) donation out of the blue does sound like a prank that the show Punk'd would spring on a celebrity.
But on Wednesday, while the size of the monetary gift truly caught Ellen DeGeneres by surprise on her talk show, the gift was authentic.
Her guest, actor Ashton Kutcher, who announced the giveaway, said the money was from a tech company called Ripple, in which he is an investor. He let on that he had been involved in company discussions on giving back to the community.
The money will support DeGeneres' wildlife fund.
On Wednesday, she had told Kutcher, who co-created Punk'd, which first aired on MTV in 2003, that she was going to Africa to work on initiatives to save the mountain gorillas.
After he sprung the surprise, the normally composed DeGeneres became teary-eyed, describing the gesture as "the most amazing thing".
