CULVER CITY (California) • The lanky guy with a dopey, chin-length bob haircut wearing a pair of hand puppets shaped like anthropomor-phic sandwiches in sunglasses looked very much the actor fans know.

Jim Carrey was filming a scene at Sony Pictures Studios for his new Showtime series, Kidding - his first regular television role since his heyday on In Living Colour and his first acting work of any kind in a couple of years. It casts him as Jeff Pickles, a children's-television host whose personal life is in free-fall.
