The spy thriller Homeland (2011 to present) stands apart from similar shows because of its heroine Carrie Mathison (Claire Danes): a brilliant but troubled Central Intelligence Agency agent who struggles with bipolar disorder and sometimes stops taking medication so her mind is sharper.

But as the award-winning series airs its final season on FX (Mondays at 10pm on Singtel TV Channel 310 and StarHub TV Channel 507, and streaming on Fox+), its creators reveal this trait was actually a late addition to the story - and an attempt to make it edgier so it could compete with other titles on American cable television.
