Hollywood does poor job of portraying richness of Singapore

When the trailer for the Crazy Rich Asians movie dropped earlier this week, I was thrilled – but also troubled.

I was excited because when I was growing up, the height of Singaporean representation in Hollywood was a running gag in the Pirates Of The Caribbean movies, which culminated in Chow Yun Fat as a pirate king declaring “Welcome to Singapore” in what looked very much like China. Not exactly a high bar.
