SINGAPORE WRITERS FESTIVAL GIGS

The worlds of literature and music come together at this year's Singapore Writers Festival, which will include performances from some of the home-grown music scene's finest independent artists.

The opening night will see Island Of Dreams, a double-bill gig by two experimental and post-rock outfits, In Each Hand A Cutlass , who composed the festival's theme tune, and I Am David Sparkle.

Award-winning New Zealand singer-songwriter Hollie Fullbrook from folk outfit Tiny Ruins will perform on Sunday. And next Thursday, Dimensions And Demons will see authors such as Daren Shiau collaborate with musicians such as Weish in live performances.

A stalwart in the Jamaican reggae scene, U Brown has been an emcee and DJ since the early 1970s and has accompanied renowned acts such as dub icon King Tubby. Joining him is up-and-coming Jamaican reggae star Conkarah , whose original tunes as well as reggae covers of contemporay pop hits have had millions of views on YouTube.

As part of the 10th birthday celebrations of the National Arts Council's youth initiative, Noise Singapore, alumni of the music mentorship programmes will share the stage at this two-day show.

Today will see established acts such as rapper Shigga Shay perform alongside up-and-coming acts such as indie outfit Ellipsis and Wyd:syd , while tomorrow's line-up includes trailblazers such as Inch Chua and budding acts such as indie quartet Take Two.

It seems unlikely but Hong Kong Cantopop diva Miriam Yeung has never staged a solo concert in Singapore. The likeable singer- actress finally makes her way here 19 years after the release of her debut album, The Wolf Is Coming (1996).

Her notable numbers include Too Bad I'm An Aquarius, Small City, Important Matter and Maiden's Prayer. Looks like her fans' prayers have finally been answered.
