Feel-good end to Idol

LOS ANGELES • Even by Hollywood fantasy standards, the finale of American Idol was heart-warmingly pitch-perfect.

During the last 15 minutes of the show on Monday, Caleb Lee Hutchinson, one of the two final contestants left in the running for the title, told host Ryan Seacrest: "Well, Maddie (Poppe) is my pal and I've known her since the beginning of Hollywood week (when the number of finalists is whittled down)."

He then dropped the bombshell: "And she actually happens to be my girlfriend."

His heart further swelled with pride when Poppe, 20, was declared the winner of ABC's reboot of the singing contest.

The swoon factor was magnified when the pair held hands to perform Somewhere Over The Rainbow together, reported People magazine.

The contest's top seven contenders will go on tour across the United States in summer, starting on July 11 in Redding, California.
