Out to prove again that she is the queen of controversy, 56-year-old Madonna has appeared topless in Interview magazine.
"Even as she reimagines herself yet again, she remains a masterpiece", says the preamble to the article.
The photo, of the pop star in a cardigan and black lacy negligee, is the only one that exposes her breasts.
There are other sexy shots of the singer. Some show her in a face cage decorated with a flower, others have her posing with a snake. She wears a corset or just lingerie in many of them.
But Madonna is no stranger to nudity, and the spread was fairly tame compared to some of the works in her 1992 coffee table book, simply titled Sex.
In the interview, which is conducted by magician David Blaine, she is candid about a range of topics, from drugs to how she dealt with failure.
She said that she has tried every drug once, when asked about her new song Devil Prays.
"It's about how people take drugs to connect to God or to a higher level of consciousness. I keep saying, 'Plugging into the matrix'," she told Blaine.
But ultimately, "they destroy you", she added.
"I mean, I tried everything once, but as soon as I was high, I spent my time drinking tons of water to get it out of my system. As soon as I was high, I was obsessed with flushing it out of me. I was like, "Okay, I'm done now'," she said.
Another new song Rebel Heart, which was leaked this week, has lyrics that appear to be a response to critics of her outrageous antics through the years.
"I spent some time as a narcissist/Hearing the others say, 'Look at you, look at you!'/Trying to be so provocative/I said, 'Oh yeah, that was me'/All the things I did just to be seen", it goes.
But to a deliberately provocative question like "What's your favourite physical feature on a man?", the sex symbol's answer was surprisingly tame.
"Eyes, and then hands," she replied.
