UNITED STATES (REUTERS) - As the sun went down, buildings across the US lit up in violet hues to mark the death of pop icon Prince.

San Francisco's city hall was awash in purple.

As was the city hall in Los Angeles.

In Seattle, the spokes and rim of the city's Great Wheel turned purple.

And in Minneapolis bridges were lit in purple.

Prince was found unresponsive in an elevator at his Paisley Park Studios compound, which included his home, in the Minneapolis suburb of Chanhassen.

The pop superstar won seven Grammy Awards and an Oscar and rose to fame with songs like Purple Rain and When Doves Cry.

Prince was 57 years old.
