Celebrities in the United States and Britain are sharing awkward teenage photos of themselves for a good cause - raise funds for hurricane relief efforts in Puerto Rico.

American talk show host Stephen Colbert kicked off the campaign, called #PuberMe, on his show The Late Show with Stephen Colbert last week, by sharing a photo of himself when he was going through puberty at 13 years old.

Colbert said the thick tie knot in the photo was because he had just come from the gym and forgot it was photo day.

"And so the photographer, who was a 60-year-old large man, gave me his jacket and his tie. That's why the knot is the size of my face," he said.

He encouraged other celebrities to also share photos of themselves from the awkward phase of their lives, and said he would donate US$1,000 (S$1,361) for each celebrity post.

The money, which would come from the Americone Dream Ice Cream fund, will go to Puerto Rico, which has been hit by Hurricane Maria.

Celebrities who have chipped in with their photos include actress Reese Witherspoon, actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt, comedian Jack Black, TV show host Jimmy Fallon, and even the Backstreet Boys.

Here are some of the most awkward throwback photos of celebrities.
