Cagney and Lacey to patrol again

LOS ANGELES • Cagney and Lacey are reporting for police duty again - 30 years after they last patrolled the streets of New York in the hit TV show.

The 1985 Best Drama Series Emmy winner is getting a reboot from CBS, with Sarah Drew, 37, and Michelle Hurd, 51, tapped as Cagney and Lacey respectively for a female-written and directed pilot.

The casting is a boost for Drew, who was axed last week from medical procedural Grey's Anatomy after nine seasons on the show.

Her task now is to help replicate the original success of Cagney And Lacey.

Tyne Daly and Sharon Gless played the title characters in the first edition, which ran on CBS for seven seasons from 1982 to 1988. The series picked up six Emmys for best actress in a drama series - four for Daly (who played Lacey) and two for Gless.

The reboot will switch the action from New York to the streets of Los Angeles, reported entertainment portal Deadline. It is the latest addition to a wave of TV-show revivals, including Miami Vice and Murphy Brown.
