Polanski extradition ruled out
Poland last Friday ruled out the extradition of director Roman Polanski to the United States to face sentencing for a 1977 case of statutory rape.
The prosecutor's office in Krakow said the Oct 30 decision by a local court "to refuse to hand Roman Polanski over to US authorities was justified" and so there was no basis for an appeal.
The decision "ends the legal proceedings" against Polanski, 82, leaving him free to reside in Poland, a lawyer said.
But new conservative Justice Minister Zbigniew Ziobro described last Friday's decision as "surprising" and announced a "very detailed review of the validity of this decision" next year.
Pop singer held for suspected drug offence
Beijing police detained Chinese pop singer Mao Ning on suspicion of a drug offence last Friday morning, Xinhua reported.
Police say they nabbed Mao, 47, in a Beijing apartment. He confessed to using crystal meth. His urine tested positive for drugs.
Mao's arrest sheds light on the rampant drug abuse in the entertainment sector. He is the latest among Chinese actors and singers who have been embroiled in drug scandals in recent years.
