NEW YORK • Actor Brad Pitt "is beside himself and has been crying" over actress Angelina Jolie's sudden divorce filing, says Us Weekly.

His sources tell the magazine that his estranged wife has taken the extreme measure of blocking all his calls and texts, after springing the divorce on him last Monday.

Pitt, 52, "was completely caught off guard", a source says. Jolie, 41, "filed the court papers a minute before the courts closed on Monday night".

Pitt "didn't have a lawyer or anything. She had threatened divorce in the past, but he did not think she would file this time", the source adds.

There was an alleged incident involving Pitt and his children aboard a private plane on Sept 14 - the day before Sept 15, which Jolie listed as the date of the couple's separation.

The FBI has confirmed that it is gathering information surrounding the incident, but People magazine, citing a source, says an investigation is unlikely to proceed.

A source tells the magazine Pitt did not strike his son Maddox, but rather "made contact" with him "in the shoulder area".

Pitt "got drunk and was fighting with Angie", another source tells Us Weekly. "Maddox stepped in to defend Angie and got in Brad's face."

In her divorce filing, Jolie is seeking sole physical custody and joint legal custody of the couple's six children: Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh and twins Knox and Vivienne.

Jolie and Pitt, who first became a couple in 2005, married at a French chateau in 2014. This was her third marriage and his second.

The estranged couple are said to have "always had disagreements when it came to disciplining the kids", according to People magazine. "Brad has always been stricter. Brad will get frustrated sometimes and yell at the kids," a source tells the magazine. But he "never used any kind of physical discipline", the source adds. "Angelina always had a more relaxed attitude when it came to the kids."

A Pitt source tells the magazine the actor knew the marriage was troubled and had been in counselling for the children's sake.

"He was willing to do anything, change any habit, change any lifestyle, to do what had to be done to make this work. And by 'make this work', that means doing what has to be done to make even a split one that is amicable and in the best interests of the children."
