The daunting tasks film-maker Robert Rodriguez faced to bring Alita: Battle Angel to the big screen included trimming James Cameron's 186-page script

Robert Rodriguez's right hand flickers across the page. In front of him is a notepad and he drags his pen first one way and then another. Gradually an image emerges. It is a large eye.

"I'm drawing Alita's eyes," he says. "I've been doing it through each interview. You carry on."
