SINGAPORE - When he was a budding teenage magician, Shin Lim would pester his mother to take him to competitions around the world, so that he could meet and learn from like-minded peers.

Madam Mabel Tan, 59, agreed to do so, simply because she wanted to know if the second of her three sons would be talented and resilient enough to thrive in the tough performance magic sphere, if he chose to follow the path.
