Singapore actor Chin Han has been cast in Independence Day 2, a sequel to 1996 blockbuster disaster film Independence Day. According to Variety magazine's website, he will play the leader of the Chinese Space Squadron in the sequel.

The actor, whose full name is Ng Chin Han, will be working with director Roland Emmerich for the second time, joining a previously announced cast that includes Bill Pullman, Jeff Goldblum, Liam Hemsworth and Charlotte Gainsbourg.

He had played a supporting role in the German film-maker's 2009 environmental disaster epic 2012.

In a statement, the Los Angeles-based Ng says: "I'm very happy to be working with Roland again, and I can't wait for you all to watch this new film."

He has just wrapped up filming for upcoming American comedy mini-series The Spoils Before Dying, which stars Will Ferrell, Maya Rudolph, Kristen Wiig, Haley Joel Osment and Michael Sheen.

In recent years, Ng has appeared in high-profile Hollywood blockbusters such as The Dark Knight (2008) and Contagion (2011). His most recent outing on the silver screen was Captain America: The Winter Soldier last year (2014).

He has also had turns on the small screen in television shows such as Arrow, Fringe and HBO Asia's first original drama series, Serangoon Road.

Filming for Independence Day 2 has already commenced. The Twentieth Century Fox film is set for release in June next year.
