Dystopia is closer than you think

The overused dystopian premise in some science-fiction stories is so badly thought out that perhaps writers can seek inspiration from Singapore

The big movie Ready Player One is opening this week.

Like many science-fiction stories, the 2011 novel on which it is based has a dystopia premise. Earth is a wasteland. Everyone is living in virtual reality, plugged into headsets that let them escape the horrors of living on a planet blasted by global warming and overpopulation.
